Your Teacher

Hi, I'm Sarah.

I'm the metalsmith behind Kukio. Six years ago I picked up a torch and taught myself to work silver. Now I make sterling jewelry with stones I hand-pick from local and international cutters, and I open my bench to anyone who wants to learn. Teaching turned out to be my favorite part.

I keep classes small so I can be at your side for every solder joint and every stone.

Who comes to class

Date night, girls’ night, or a gift that lasts

Most people don’t come to learn metalsmithing. They come for a night out, a birthday, or time with someone they love, and leave with jewelry they made.

Date night

A date you both wear home

Two seats side by side and a ring each at the end. One of the more unique date ideas in Spokane, and one of the few that lasts.

Make something instead

A birthday spent with a torch and a tray of stones beats another dinner out. Pick a ring, a pendant, or a pair of earrings.

Parents & kids

Two generations at the bench

Mothers and daughters, grandmothers and granddaughters, a mom and her son. Some of my favorite reviews come from families.

Small team outings

Team building with a torch

A team of up to four can book a whole session: a creative workshop where everyone learns something new and leaves with proof.

Questions

Things I get asked a lot

I’ve never done anything like this. Is that okay?

That’s most people, and it’s who the classes are built for. We start with how to hold the saw, and nobody is ever behind.

Is silversmithing hard to learn?

The basics are very learnable in an afternoon. Most of my students have never soldered anything before they sit down at the bench. Getting really good takes practice, which is what the four-week workshop is for, but you don’t need experience or any special skill to make a piece you’re proud of. The four-week workshop →

How long does it take to make a ring?

Plan on 3–4 hours for the ring workshop, start to finish, including time to choose your stone. You leave wearing the ring.

What should I wear to a jewelry making class?

Comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty, and closed-toe shoes. Tie back long hair and skip loose sleeves or dangly scarves, since you’ll be working near a torch. Everything else, from tools to safety gear, is at your bench.

Can I book the whole class for my group?

Yes. Seats are sold one at a time, so book every seat and the class is yours. Ring and four-week sessions have four seats; pendant and earring sessions have two. It’s a good fit for birthdays, bachelorette parties, girls’ nights, and small team outings. For anything larger, email me. Email Sarah →

Can I give a class as a gift?

Yes. Reserve a seat in their name, or send a gift card and let them pick the date. It’s an experience gift that ends with something they keep. Kukio gift cards →
